Prove You’re an Australian Business

If you are an Australian Business you should have your .com.au Domain Name and now it is recommended that you also claim the .au Domain Name. This shows people and Google that you are an Australian Business.

Some businesses that are international may also have the .com Domain Name registered.

.au shows it is an Australian Identity and can be used in a Domain Name as an extension like;

• .com.au is a Commercial (.com) identity in Australia (.au)
• .org.au is an Organisational (.org) identity in Australia (.au)
• .net.au is an Network (.net) identity in Australia (.au)
• .edu.au is an Educational (.edu) identity in Australia (.au)
• .id.au is an Individual (.id) identity in Australia (.au)

Eligibility Rules for .au Domain Name

Unlike a .com or .net, not everyone is entitled to register a .au, .com.au, .net.au, .org.au. You must meet the special criteria as outlined in the auDA policy.

Here are some of the basic auDA Eligibility Rules

First come, first served

1. Domain name licences are allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. It is not possible to pre-register or otherwise reserve a domain name.

Registrants must be Australian

2. Domain name licences may only be allocated to a registrant who is Australian, as defined under the eligibility and allocation rules for each 2LD.

Composition of domain names

3. Domain names must:

a) be at least two characters long;

b) contain only letters (a-z), numbers (0-9) and hyphens (-), or a combination of these;

c) start and end with a number or a letter, not a hyphen; and

d) not contain hyphens in the third and fourth position (eg. ab–cd.com.au).
